Earlier this month, Destin City Council voted 6-1 to change the zoning rules so that churches could open free health clinics.
Tuesday, the council will take the required second vote on the zoning ordinance, which would enable Beach Drive’s Destin Church of Christ to open a free clinic for Destin workers, if the church meets all other city requirements. The change would allow the proposed “Hope Medical Clinic,” or any other similar clinic, to operate 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday to Saturday.
Also on Tuesday, the council will review proposals for making it easier for Destin workers to afford to live in the city.
Last year, the city proposed requiring new development to either include “attainable housing” or put money into a city housing fund. Local builders and developers, and some council members, objected this was a bad move when the real-estate market is slumping, and suggested that instead, the city change its development rules to allow, for example, more units per acre.
Also on the agenda:
•Renewing Destin’s interlocal library agreement with Okaloosa County. The agreement allows everyone in Okaloosa County and the county cities to use Destin Library or any of the other municipal libraries.
•Council member Jim Wood will discuss the possibility of contributing money to the Destin Community Land Trust, a local housing group.
Destin City Council will meet 6 p.m. Tuesday at the City Hall Annex. All city offices are closed Monday for Labor Day. Fraser Sherman will live-blog from the meeting at http://frasersmind.freedomblogging.com
