Vendor Applications Reopened
Due to the change in date for Dog Daze 2009, we now have some vendor spots available. Click here for a vendor application — deadline for submission of these forms is Noon on Thursday, October 15. (All references to the original date of Sept. 12 on all Dog Daze materials shall be understood to now refer to the new date of October 17.)

If you were registered and paid for the earlier date, all arrangements will simply be transferred to the October 17 event.

DOG DAZE 2009 – Join us October 17 at Fort Walton Landing!

Yes, we were rained out on September 12 — but we’re excited about seeing you all on October 17, our rain date for Dog Daze 2009. In conjunction with the AKC Responsible Pet Ownership program, this popular all day event includes music, pet readings, and canine demonstrations, as well as games for dogs and their owners. Watch the Agility & Dachshund Races or have your dog run the Doggie Fun Zone lure course. Take the Canine Good Citizen Test, have your pet micro-chipped, or arrange to get a great photo. Don’t forget to check out the Bowser Bazaar to buy your doggie related merchandise. Goody Bags and clean-up bags with registration donation. Come and have fun ALL DAY!

Our friends from PAWS, the Panhandle Animal Welfare Society, will be offering $5.00 rabies vaccinations and $15.00 microchips at Dog Daze. They’ll also be providing personalized ID tags with emergency contact phone numbers at a cost of $5.00. Be prepared for hurricane season! All well-behaved dogs (over 6 months of age) are welcome!

Registration is necessary and proof of current rabies vaccination is required. Pets must be on a solid leash at all times.

Let’s make 2009 the year the world finds an answer to climate change.
The numbers dont sound big, but their effects could be cataclysmic. A 2C rise above pre-industrial levels would see 20-40% of the Amazon die off within 100 years. A 3C rise would see 75% of the forest destroyed by drought over the following century, while a 4C rise would kill 85%. (Nature Geoscience).

However there is good news. The worst of global warming can still be avoided if Greenhouse gases levels are cut substantially.

FDIC rules changes open way for private investors to buy failed banks

Squeezed by rising bank failures, regulators made it easier Wednesday for private investors to buy failed institutions.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.’s board voted 4-1 to reduce the cash that private-equity funds must maintain in banks they acquire.

Private-equity funds tend to buy distressed companies, slash costs and resell them a few years later. They have been criticized for excessive risk-taking. But the depth of the banking crisis has softened the FDIC’s resistance to them.

The agency’s deposit insurance fund, which insures customers’ deposits, has shrunk under the weight of collapsing banks. Analysts warn it could fall below zero by year’s end. At least in theory, having private investors buy failing banks would allow the FDIC to reduce the losses it would have to cover at a failed bank.

Under the new rules, a buyer would need to maintain the bank’s capital reserves equal to 10 percent of the failed bank’s assets. And the new policy reduces the circumstances under which private investors must maintain minimum levels of capital that might be needed to bolster banks they own.

But the FDIC sought to guard against private-equity funds that might want to quickly buy and sell at a profit: It requires the acquiring investors to maintain a bank’s minimum capital levels for three years.

Eighty-one banks have failed this year, compared with 25 last year and three in 2007. The closings have drained billions from the FDIC deposit insurance fund, which insures regular bank accounts up to $250,000 and is financed with fees paid by U.S. banks.

The FDIC estimates bank failures will cost the fund about $70 billion through 2013. The fund stood at $13 billion, its lowest level since 1993, at the end of March. The FDIC seizes failed banks and seeks buyers for their branches, deposits and soured loans. Under the crush of failures, the agency says private equity can inject vitally needed capital into the system, especially with fewer healthy banks looking to acquire failed institutions.

“There’s an enormous need for private money to do this,” said Josh Lerner, a professor of finance at Harvard Business School. “There’s the sense that you have a lot of money which is currently sitting on the sidelines.”

FPL: Rate increase will save customers money in the long run

The CEO of the state’s largest utility wrapped up three days of testimony on a proposed $1.3 billion a year rate hike insisting that residential electricity rates will go down. Armando Olivera, Florida Power & Light Co.’s CEO, said the utility needs the rate hike to preserve its credit rating or customers will pay more in the long run.

Crist comes out against FPL rate hike

Gov. Charlie Crist on Tuesday came out foursquare against Florida Power and Light’s proposed $1.3 billion rate hike, calling it “excessive.” The governor issued a prepared statement from Tallahassee, where the state Public Service Commission is considering what would be the largest proposed power-rate increase in Florida history.
