For the past year, Greenpeace USA has been putting pressure on Kellogg Co. in an attempt to get the company to remove genetically engineered ingredients from its entire product line. In Europe, Kellogg’s products are free of genetically engineered ingredients.

In a press conference held on Thursday, Greenpeace genetic engineering specialist Charles Margulis told reporters that tests commissioned by the group on three of Kellogg’s Morningstar Farms products revealed a gene-altered soy ingredient and genetically modified corn.

It turns out that StarLink corn, unapproved for human consumption, was found in Kellogg’s Morningstar Farms brand meatless corn dogs. The genetically engineered soy was found in the corn dogs and two other products. While it is not illegal to use genetically engineered soy, Kellogg had previously said that they were using non-genetically engineered soy in their Morningstar Farms, Worthington, Natural Touch and Loma Linda products since April 1, 2000.

Hopefully this negative publicity will cause Kellogg’s management to think further about removing genetically engineered ingredients from their entire products line.

If you’ve heard about hexane before, it was likely in the context of gasoline-the air pollutant is also a byproduct of gas refining. But in 2007, grain processors were responsible for two-thirds of our national hexane emissions. Hexane is hazardous in the factory, too: Workers who have been exposed to it have developed both skin and nervous system disorders. Troubling, then, that the FDA does not monitor or regulate hexane residue in foods. More worrisome still: According to the report, “Nearly every major ingredient in conventional soy-based infant formula is hexane extracted.”

Announcing the 2010 Buyer Bonus program, a national sales event designed to extend the benefits of the tax credit program after the April 30th deadline.

The Home Buyer Tax Credit was created to stimulate the U.S. housing market and address the economic challenges facing our nation.  But the Tax Credit expires on April 30, 2010 and home sales are expected to slow down without a similar incentive.

So the Coldwell Banker brand has designed a way to keep home buyers in the market after April 30th with the introduction of The Buyer Bonus program while extending the benefits of the government program to a much wider audience of potential homebuyers.

How the program will work:
The event will begin on May 1st and will end on July 31st. The launch is timed to coincide with the April 30th expiration of the government’s Homebuyer Tax Credit.

Participating home sellers agree to refund 3% of their final purchase price as a credit of up to $8,000 to the buyer at close. It’s open to all home buyers and there are no eligibility or qualification restrictions. There will be national marketing support including tags on TV advertising and banners on coldwellbanker.com that link to a landing page where consumers can search participating properties.

Vendor Applications Reopened
Due to the change in date for Dog Daze 2009, we now have some vendor spots available. Click here for a vendor application — deadline for submission of these forms is Noon on Thursday, October 15. (All references to the original date of Sept. 12 on all Dog Daze materials shall be understood to now refer to the new date of October 17.)

If you were registered and paid for the earlier date, all arrangements will simply be transferred to the October 17 event.

Yes, we were rained out on September 12 — but we’re excited about seeing you all on October 17, our rain date for Dog Daze 2009. In conjunction with the AKC Responsible Pet Ownership program, this popular all day event includes music, pet readings, and canine demonstrations, as well as games for dogs and their owners. Watch the Agility & Dachshund Races or have your dog run the Doggie Fun Zone lure course. Take the Canine Good Citizen Test, have your pet micro-chipped, or arrange to get a great photo. Don’t forget to check out the Bowser Bazaar to buy your doggie related merchandise. Goody Bags and clean-up bags with registration donation. Come and have fun ALL DAY!

Our friends from PAWS, the Panhandle Animal Welfare Society, will be offering $5.00 rabies vaccinations and $15.00 microchips at Dog Daze. They’ll also be providing personalized ID tags with emergency contact phone numbers at a cost of $5.00. Be prepared for hurricane season!
